BUYER’S NOTES

Updated November 13, 2022

FRUIT

Side Hill (Sacramento Foothills) Satsuma harvest came to a standstill with the rain last week. Plenty of fruit on the trees and ready to pick, but it was too wet in the fields and the fruit needed to dry out. Moisture in the fruit can cause skin issues and breakdown. Look for fruit to return by Monday. Don’t miss our Vegucation blog on Side Hill Citrus. Buck (Central Valley) Satsumas will also be arriving early this week. California Strawberries have slowed way down and we may see a gap. Hachiya Persimmons are done, Fuyus are available for a few more weeks.

Cuyama Arkansas Black Apple

D’Anjou Pears

Side Hill Citrus Satsumas

APPLES

Snow on the Wenatchee Pass has delayed loads out of Washington. NEW Cuyama Pink Lady and Arkansas Black Apples. Full Club Apple class with Ambrosia, Envy, Opal, SugarBee and Jazz. Learn how farmers can join the club.

Download Earl’s Club Apple Guide.

Braeburns, Honeycrisp and Granny Smith make a delicious apple pie! Flavor and texture are the most important things to consider. The goal is a type of apple that will soften in the oven until tender, yet keep its shape and maintain some textural bite, rather than becoming a mushy, mealy mess. We recommend having fun and mixing and matching apple varieties.

Don’t miss Cuyama snack-size Lady Apples and the Crimson Gold Crab Apple.

AVOCADOS

Good volume and pricing on Mexican Avocados. Higher oil content and flavor continues to improve.

BANANAS

The dry season in Mexico means you won’t be seeing paraffin wraps on the crowns (used to prevent crown rot) – but we will continue to see the wrap on fruit from Ecuador.

BERRIES

Rain has slowed down production and not a lot of legs on berries. Tough month on all berries. Strawberries out of Mexico will start up mid-December.

Blackberries: Tomatero is back this week. Production out of Baja and Mexico starts up the middle of December

Blueberries: GreenBelle Peruvian through the end of the year. Forbidden will not have volume until the end of December.

Strawberries: Very tight due to the cold and rain. Limited California fruit.

Raspberries: Excellent flavor on Fresh Kampo (Mexico) fruit.

Mammoth Kiwi, cut

citrus

Side Hill Citrus Satsumas (Sacramento Foothills) return Sunday. Buck will start up with their Satsumas out of the Central Valley on Monday. California Valencia Oranges are your best bet now for juicing and will be around for another week or two depending on supply, demand and the weather. Valencias from Mexico starting up this week. Even though California Navel Oranges start up in late October we recommend eating when the flavor is great, which happens around the holiday season. Navels are best eaten out of hand and should only be juiced if enjoyed immediately because of the bitter compound Limonin found in the white pith.

Lemons out of Mexico will have plenty of volume through December. A new crop of Lemons is now coming out of the desert and looking beautiful! We can look forward to the volume coming on a little stronger as prices have already declined.

Ruby Grapefruits are back from RVO. Rio Red have started up out of the desert with Flames not far behind.

EFI Certified early Fukumoto Navels are coming from Tule Specialty out of Southern California.

Equitable Food Initiative (EFI) is a nonprofit certification and skill-building organization that brings transparency and greater assurance to the supply chain. fall

Hachiya Persimmons are done. Fuyus will go for a few more weeks and make an excellent out of hand snack. Pomegranates have had outstanding quality. Eco grade are lighter color and a great value. Quince have very hard and bumpy green/yellowish skin that looks like a cross between a pear and an apple. But beware! Do not try to bite into it like an apple, the tart and astringent flesh demands to be cooked before eating.

grapes

Red, Green and Black Seedless Grapes through Thanksgiving with sharp quality and excellent flavor! Then green and black will be done and red seedless grapes will carry us through Christmas.

kiwi

New Zealand Gold Kiwis for another few weeks. Homegrown California Mammoth Kiwis return soon out of Porterville. Available in 20/1# (3-4 kiwis per clamshell) and Volume Fill. An eye-catching piece of fruit perfect to highlight next to your bulk display. Meet the Mammoth Kiwi growers in the field.

melons

Cantaloupe, Honeydew and Mini Seedless Watermelon have decent volume out of Mexico.

nuts

Don’t miss our nut category with Bulk Almonds, Bulk Halves/Pieces and Whole Walnuts and Bagged Pistachios in Shell. NEW! Chestnuts arrive just in time to kick off the week. Sweet and meaty, chestnuts are a fall favorite. Easy tips for cooking and eating chestnuts in our Vegucation.

pears

We have an array of wonderful varieties to try. Out of the Pacific Northwest look to Bartlett, Comice, Concorde, D’Anjou, Golden Bosc, and Red D’Anjou. Asian Pears are crisp like an apple and juicy like a pear.

raisins

Did you know that Dried Black Raisins are the largest and plumpest raisins? Fantastic for snacking as well as baking. Red, Black and Green Raisin Canisters from Sunview are delicious and available in 12/15oz cans. Vacuum-packed canisters offer a long shelf life.

tropicals

California Keitts are done, and we have moved fully into the Ecuadorian Tommy Atkins boat fruit. Fruit may have some cosmetic issues from being on the boat, this does not affect the flavor. Covilli Pineapples are sporadic. Solid inventory on Dole Fair Trade Pineapples. Papayas are eating really well. Sub-tropical favorites - Dragon Fruit and Kiwano Horned Melon are back.

VEGETABLES

The rain and cool weather drastically decreased volume on Baby Sweet Broccoli, Broccoli Crowns and Baby Bok Choy. Dwelley Green Beans are done and Covilli is starting up slow out of Mexico. The heavy rain has ended the Tutti Frutti Mixed Heirloom deal. Covilli Mixed Heirlooms are starting off slow. Anna’s first land of Red Napa Cabbage is gorgeous! Don’t miss Earl’s Weekly Special. Jumbo Carrots will gap until the middle of November when Cal-O starts up with product harvested in the desert.

Leaf items continue to command sky-high prices, and Carrots—a Thanksgiving staple for many recipes—are in short supply, but there are still options for organic retail promotions, including Fresh Herbs. Read all the details below in the Organic Produce Network Thanksgiving article.

Afternoon greetings from Ralph's Greenhouse! It's a nice day to be out and about harvesting vegetables. It's dry, not too cold, and a good time to be filling Thanksgiving orders. Remember all those vegetables that wouldn't grow in the spring because it was too wet and too cold? Well, they've all caught up with us and we have a pretty good supply on just about everything in time for the Thanksgiving orders.

Organicgirl update: Tender Leaf Blends have improved, and we anticipate a strong supply going into next week. Romaine will continue to be tight on supply as we work through supply and quality challenges. With our last week up north, we anticipate improvements once transition is complete.

Sunrise Bulgarian Carrot is spicy, crisp and fruity with crunchy skin excellent for pickling and roasting

Sweet Potatoes are a fan favorite
for the holidays!

asparagus

Asparagus from Mexico is ramping up, and supplies should be increasing over the next month, offering promotional opportunities moving into the Thanksgiving holiday and into Christmas.

artichokes

Cooler weather and rain has tightened up supply.

bunched beets

Ralph’s done with everything but Carrots and Leeks. Small amount of Sun Valley.

VARIETAL beans

Dwelley is done on all beans. Covilli Green Beans are off to a slow start, but we will see better volume coming this week.

baby bok choy

Anna’s delayed getting into the field due to the rain. Small amount from Lakeside and prices are up.

Broccoli

All California Broccoli experiencing seasonal quality issues from pin rot to discoloration. Some product from Tomatero. Prices are climbing.

sweet baby broccoli

Lakeside very tight.

brussels sprouts

Harvesting has slowed down due to the rain and muddy fields. Will see improved volume as we move towards Thanksgiving.

cabbage

Anna’s Red Napa Cabbage is so pretty! On Earl’s Weekly Specials.

carrots

Hard to find due to the late summer heat wave in Bakersfield. Look for sweet Bunched Nantes from Ralph’s and Sunrise.

cauliflower

Very limited until product starts up out of the desert in the next few weeks.

romanesco

Lakeside is beautiful and a great substitute for Cauliflower and Broccoli, which is scarce right now.

celery

Key item for Thanksgiving with good volume and pricing.

cucumbers

The first Fair Trade Divine Persians are here in bags, bulk and clamshells.

eggplant

Globe and Graffiti in good supply.

greens

Sun Valley strong volume on chards and kales. The challenge has been getting back into a muddy field to pick.

herbs

Holiday Mix Herbs with Shipper and Turkey Blend are back in stock! Pre-orders on herbs are always appreciated as we get closer to Thanksgiving.

lettuce

Organic leaf items are still red hot and getting hotter. The storms that hit Salinas and Watsonville this week have ended most of that production. Iceberg is finishing up out of the Salinas/Watsonville area and we may see a gap before the desert starts up in a week. Green Leaf, Red Leaf, Romaine and Romaine Hearts are extremely limited and expensive. Great substitute options include Pete’s Living Butter Lettuce, Butter Lettuce, Salanova, Speckled Romaine, organicgirl salad mixes and loose spring mix.

leeks

Ralph’s returns this week.

mushrooms

Criminis continue to tighten up. Now is the time to get excited about different mushroom varieties. Shiitake make a wonderful substitute for Crimini mushrooms. Add wild mushrooms to stuffing or sauté for a side dish. Think meaty Oysters and Trumpet or the wonderfully adaptable Maitake. Download Earl’s fresh and dried mushroom guides.

bell peppers

Green Bells are looking better. California Colored Bell Peppers are tightening up and Mexico coming on slower on all colors.

hot peppers

Plenty of Jalapenos and some Anaheims out of Mexico. The Sunrise Bulgarian Carrot Hot Pepper is back for a special limited time! It is spicy, crisp and fruity with crunchy skin excellent for pickling and roasting.

tomatoes

The heavy rain ended the Tutti Frutti deal. Covilli Mixed Heirlooms are starting off slow.

winter squash

Dwelley is winding down on all squash. Kabocha will be tight through Thanksgiving and Red Kuri is gapping. Mexico won’t start up for another 2-3 weeks. Carnival is limited. Plenty of all other varieties: Acorn, Butternut, Buttercup, Black Futsu, Delicata, Honeynut (the think skin is edible), Spaghetti, Sweet Dumpling and Tetsukabuto.

Ethan Abendroth, senior buyer for Earl’s Organic Produce on the San Francisco Wholesale Market, said organic sweet potatoes—always a fan favorite for the turkey-centric holidays—are an excellent produce item to promote over the next two weeks. “Supplies are steady, and all sheds are shipping,” he said of the organic storage sweet potato crop. “Right now, we are seeing very high velocity on organic sweet potatoes with aggressive pricing being offered by growers and distributors.”

Of course, Abendroth added that "aggressive pricing" in the fall of 2022 has a different feel than a year ago. “When you talk about promotions, price points look different. They are at least 10-15 percent higher than a year ago,” he said.

Inflation is the culprit as input costs are higher, and growers must be discerning as they offer ad prices. “We’re not asking for rock bottom pricing, just a reasonable cap,” Abendroth said.

Scanning his sales sheet, Abendroth said organic asparagus also offers some promotional opportunities moving into the Thanksgiving holiday and into Christmas. Asparagus from Mexico is ramping up, and supplies should be increasing over the next month.

Rick Kilby, who also handles some vegetables and other crops for Earl’s, chimed in with a few other options. First, he noted that organic leaf items “are still red hot and getting hotter. The storms that hit Salinas and Watsonville this week have ended most of that production. We’re going to be looking toward the desert next week (as the Thanksgiving pull begins) for lettuce.”

Rick Kilby, Buyer
Earl's Organic Produce

Lettuce, Kilby said, is one of the few wet crops that may have some availability out of the desert districts prior to Thanksgiving. Cutting of most other vegetables won’t get started until after the holiday.

Organic carrots are hard to find due to the late summer heat wave in Bakersfield, but one bright spot is organic celery. “Growers planned to have volume available for Thanksgiving, and we are seeing a significant increase in supplies,” Kilby said. Demand for organic celery is very good, with affordable FOB pricing and promotional opportunities for celery for Thanksgiving ads.

While the organic green onion market is tight, Kilby said the price did come back to earth a couple of weeks ago, and the product should be available for the Thanksgiving shopping list. Brussels sprouts might make a fine addition to this year’s menu as there is good availability, Kilby said. “And organic Romanesco could be a nice substitute for broccoli, which is scarce right now,” he said.

Lastly organic green beans are a popular Thanksgiving item that will have some availability but at a strong market price. Kilby said organic green bean supplies will be increasing over the next few weeks, but the volume spike will come a bit late for Thanksgiving.
