CITRUS WEATHER UPDATE
It is a volatile citrus market with more rain coming in and here to stay through Christmas week. That, added to the cooler temps across California, makes for slower growth on most items. The heavy tule fog in the Central Valley is hanging on tight and keeping citrus groves and fruit moist. Citrus and in particular thin skinned zipper skin like Satsumas do not like heavy fog, rain or cold moist weather. Side Hill Citrus, an Earl's exclusive, (Lincoln in the Sacramento Foothills) is struggling under heavy fog and losing fruit to heavy moisture. They are getting to the end of their season unfortunately. We are hoping for at least one more arrival of their delicious Satsumas. Good news, Side Hill is now harvesting Meyer Lemons Harvesting moist citrus can lead to abrasions and cell rupture, and quality issues can show up post-harvest. We are sorting fruit as needed to manage quality issues, but we appreciate you working product when necessary. Expect citrus to remain a challenge for the time being.
Fruit World (Reedley) Satsumas have fantastic flavor and are packed with synephrine, a natural decongestant. We recommend eating four to five satsumas a day to stay healthy this holiday season! They are also delicious in holiday cocktails. Try a Sidecar classic cocktail with a sugar & clove rim. Buck is starting to harvest some of their fun varietals including Limequats, Lee Nova and Algerian Mandarins.
