The first of the California breba fig crop is also known as the first crop. The breba crop grows on last year’s tree shoots and hasn’t developed the honey sweetness we associate with figs.

Onions are available year-round, but they are a seasonal item! The new California crop is barely cured. This means they will not have the hard exterior skin seen in peak season products from up north. The skin will likely be shaggy and flaky. There are benefits to fresh crop product! California Stone Fruit season kicks off with sublime Royal Lynn Cherries from Fruit World and Tiogas from Frog Hollow Farm.

California Cherry season is just around the corner, and we anticipate our first land of cherries Thursday or Friday this week! The cherry season is very short in California and typically lasts 6 to 8 weeks depending on the weather or variety.

Storage onions are almost done and we are looking to imports to finish out the season. Onions will be very tight for April, and we will see gaps on red and white onions. It is uncertain to when onions from Mexico will be available. Storage yellow and sweet onions continue out of the Pacific Northwest a little longer. California will start up with new crop onions in May.

Spring onions have crisp green leaves and firm white or red bulbs. This mild tasting onion is its own unique variety.  They can be grown year round but they are usually highlighted during the spring.  Now is a great time to try them when some of the storage onions are almost finished and we are waiting for the new fresh crop. 

It will be a bumpy road during the transition over the next month. We will see better quality and supply as growers move up north. Leaf lettuces are starting the transition as the desert warms up, resulting in quality issues and pest pressure.
