BUYER’S NOTES

Updated March 17, 2024

FRUIT

fruit mARKET update

Lots of delicious Citrus varieties in good supply. Sweet and tart Rio Red, Marsh Ruby and Star Ruby are eating great. Tango and Murcott Mandarins are easy to peel and packed full of flavor. Minneolas have the richness, aroma, and color of a mandarin with the tart edge characteristic of a grapefruit. Club Apples are winding down, and Bartlett Import Pears are here with good flavor. Be patient as you wait 1-2 weeks for them to ripen up. Berries have great flavor & steady supply for this time of year. Forbidden Blueberries are a premium California berry and in promotable volume.

Equal Exchange Fair Trade Avocados out of Mexico will go through the month. As we near the end of Mexican Avocado, mature fruit has a high oil content and eats differently. Pro Tip: Eat when the fruit gives slightly to pressure. We may see some California Hass Avocados this week. Avocados at the beginning of the season will be immature, low in oil content and take longer to ripen.

Stone Fruit season is looking to be good with a strong bloom set. The trees had chill hours, no frost damage and plenty of water. Cherry season is expected to start up in May.

Apples

Good production on Club Apple Varieties: Envy, Cosmic Crisp, Jazz and SugarBee. Domestic favorites out of the Pacific Northwest, Fuji, Honeycrisp, Gala and Granny Smith are steady. Cuyama California Sweetie and Crimson Gold Apples are not to be missed.

Avocados

Equal Exchange Fair Trade Avocados out of Mexico will go through the month.  As we near the end of Mexican Avocado, mature fruit has a high oil content and eats differently. Pro Tip: Eat when the fruit gives slightly to pressure. We may see some California Avocados this week. Bananas

March is Equal Exchange Banana Month. Every purchase matters.

Banana loads have been delayed on the water. We will have plenty of Bananas this week. Did you know Earl’s is a Banana house and has 6 Banana ripening rooms in our warehouse?

BERRIES

Blackberries and Raspberries coming out of Baja with increased volume.

Blueberries: It is an active California market with Homegrown coming out of the Central Coast in 6oz and pints. A great value option. Forbidden out of Santa Maria is a premium Blueberry with outstanding flavor. Betterful Blueberries (Tulare County) pints set for end of March/early April, just when the Central Coast growing regions will gap.

Berries, continued

Strawberries: California AG Berries have full color and the flavor just keeps getting better. Learn more about the farm under Earl’s Vegucation. Tomatero will start up in mid-April, weather dependent.

Minneola Tangelo

Citrus

Grapefruit Rio Red transitioning from San Diego to the Central Valley. NEW! Marsh Ruby Grapefruits are one the most popular variety of Grapefruit and have outstanding flavor! It is sweet with floral undertones and low tangy acidity.

California Meyer Lemons are tightening up. Marsalisi had a crop failure this year and will return next season.

Lime market is softening with plenty of volume.

Blood Orange is sizing up on the larger side. Sanguinelli Blood Oranges are oblong shaped with orange flesh and red streaks. Returning Monday.

Navels are in good supply. Buck Heirloom Navels have excellent flavor and are super juicy.

Nagami Kumquats are done. Buck is back Monday with Centennial, Mandarinquat and Meiwa Kumquats.

Buck Gold Nuggets came and went. Rainbow Valley Orchard will start up soon with their crop.

Pixie Mandarins will be a quick shot. Tango Mandarins will go through March. Excellent flavor on Minneola Tangelos from Fruitworld, a cross between a Dancy Mandarin and an ancestral variety of grapefruit called Pommelo. It has the richness, aroma, and color of a mandarin with the tart edge characteristic of a grapefruit.

California Valencias will start up in the next month.

Marsh Ruby Grapefruit

grapes

Import Grapes from Anthony are done for now. Red Sweet Celebration returns the front side of this week. Green Seedless Grapes are gapping. It is a struggle to get grapes to the West Coast.

kiwi

California Green Kiwis are super tasty and available in Volume Fill and convenient grab-and-go cello packs and clamshells.

melons

Mini Seedless Watermelons will start up with abundance in April.

pears

At the end of the Pacific Northwest D’Anjou season. Golden Bosc will stick around a little longer. Plenty of Red D’Anjou for another few weeks out of the Pacific Northwest. Green Bartletts are a diamond bullet with great flavor, however they are very green and can take a few weeks to ripen up. Import Red Bartletts coming soon out of Argentina.

Pomegranates

Arils are back and in good supply. No muss or fuss. Add to salads or top your favorite rice or grain for a flavorful side dish.

stone fruit

Stone Fruit season is only a few months away. There have been no major cold snaps and plenty of water and it is looking to be a good season with Dwelley Cherries starting up in May.

veg mARKET update

During the winter months many growers move their operations from the Salinas and San Joaquin Valley down to Yuma, Arizona and the California desert. As the weather warms up historically in March, the growing areas move north from Mexico and the California desert to the Salinas Valley. It will be a bumpy road during the transition over the next month. We will see better quality and supply as growers move up north. Leaf Lettuces are starting the transition as the desert warms up, resulting in quality issues and pest pressure. Prices will start to decline on Baby Bok Choy and Broccoli as the weather improves in the northern growing region. Josie’s Regenerative Baby Sweet Broccoli is now coming out Watsonville/Salinas with good quality. Celery is usually the last to transition and will improve once it transitions. Look to Mexican Celery for consistent supply and quality.

In brighter news, get ready for California grown Coastal View Produce Asparagus volume to increase in a big way as weather warms up. Easter is only a few weeks away and a great time to promote California Grown. Download POS Cards and a Grower Profile below.

Working with the last of the storage Onion and Potato crop and looking to imports to finish out the season. We will see a gap until on Red Onions until Mexico or the desert starts up in 2-4 weeks. Tasteful Selections gapping on Gold Creamer straight packs and medley bags. The Pacific Northwest is winding down on Russets and we are moving into sharp product out of Colorado. Look for Fresh Crop Russets and Red Potatoes to start up in late May/early June

Domestic Garlic is wrapping up the season as we see the bulbs tiring out. Argentinian Garlic are nice and big, bright white, hard neck variety at a great price. Eventually we will be in all imports from Argentina and Mexico and new crop in summer.

Mexican Blue Ginger ending soon and we will see a gap before the first of Peruvian Ginger arrives in April by air, much earlier than expected.

Organicgirl will continue to gap on Arugula until they transition back north in April.

Asparagus

Good weather in the Salinas Valley makes the Asparagus crowns happy and they will start producing soon in a bigger way. Look for plenty of California Coastal View Produce for Easter on March 31st. Asparagus out of Mexico represents a value option.

Artichokes

Steady supply from local Salinas Valley grower, JAS.

baby bok choy

Baby Bok Choy is very limited, and prices reflect that. No change until the weather improves.

green beans & Brussels sprouts

Covilli has an abundance of Fair Trade Green Beans and Brussels Sprouts for the Easter Holiday.

brOCCOLI & brOCCOLI CROWNS

We are keeping an eye on quality on Broccoli coming out of the desert. It may be a bumpy ride as growers transition back up north.

SWEET BABY broccoli

Josie’s Regenerative is a good value in a tight and high-priced market until Salinas and Watsonville get going in the Spring.

carrots

Sunrise Sweet Nantes and Rainbow Bunched Carrots are a must for Easter celebrations.

ginger

Mexican Blue Ginger ending soon and we will see a gap before the first of Peruvian Ginger arrives in April by air, much earlier than expected.

greens

Starting to slide into the Watsonville/Salinas deal with more volume from Tomatero and Sun Valley. Lakeside and Oceanside Greens offer a value option coming out of Southern California.

lettuce

We will see better quality on Leaf Lettuce as it transitions back up north from Bakersfield to Watsonville/Salinas. Prices will remain high until volume and quality picks up. Red Butter Lettuce is back in a limited way. There is plenty of Red and Green Leaf and Romaine with prices still elevated. Organicgirl will gap on Arugula until April until they transition back up north.
