Earl’s Organic Buyer’s Notes February 22, 2021

Covilli Mexican Valencia oranges are perfect for juicing! They have thin skin, excellent taste, aroma and color.  Sweet and juicy, Gold Nuggets resemble the flavor of Pixies, and they are easy to peel and seedless. Moro Bloods have a beautiful dark red internal color, berry aromas and a wonderfully rich flavor. Tango Mandarins are a seedless Murcott. Its rind is rich with citrus oil and aromatic when pierced or muddled. Nagami and Meiwa Kumquats are now at the peak of flavor. Don’t miss the new Centennial Kumquat from Buck. Its sweet skin has moderately acidic pulp. Larger than your Nagami or Meiwa, it also has a greater proportion of juicy flesh and a thinner peel. Cara Caras, also known as the pink navel, have gorgeous internal reddish pink flesh.  Fragrant Meyer Lemons are in good supply. Lime prices are increasing. Pummelos are back in stock. Lee  Mandarins have a deep orange rind with a sweet, aromatic flavor. They are somewhat easy to peel. Maramalade Oranges, also called Seville or Bitter Oranges are great for making candied citrus and marmalade.  Finger Limes(also known as Caviar Lime)  have a tangy effervescent flavor. Gently squeeze the “caviar” out of the fruit and garnish sushi, seafood, melons, desserts or your favorite cocktail. Earl’s Organic Produce, Inc., a leading distributor of organic produce throughout
Northern California, seeks a skilled and safe Order Picker for our San Francisco
Wholesale Produce Market headquarters.

The Order Picker position fills customers’ orders from stored merchandise in accordance with specifications from Order Selecting software and computer devices. Duties include preparing and fulfilling Order Selection Transactions, keeping records of out-going orders, loading trucks, operating and maintaining equipment, requisitioning additional materials, supplies, and cleaning work area and equipment.

 

Shifts available:

3pm – 11:30pm

 

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

 

  • Operate all scanning devices and associated software used in the order selecting process;
  • Obtain merchandise from bins, shelves, and coolers;
  • Build (palletize) orders with caution so as to not damage product;
  • Examine products to verify quality standards;
  • Count finished products to determine if product orders are completed;
  • Pallet wrap, mark and tag identification for the palletized merchandise;
  • Operate machinery used in the order picking process, or assist machine operators;
  • Load trucks per Company Standard Operating Procedures, as needed;Maintain equipment per Company SOP;
  • Perform to 80 pieces per hour minimum average;
  • Maintain 98% accuracy as measured by transaction;
  • Perform to all other company standards;
  • Observe equipment operations so that malfunctions can be detected, and notify management as necessary;
  • Ensure work is performed safely at all times;
  • Wear proper safety equipment at all times;
  • Punctuality and regular and reliable attendance.

 

Perform other duties as directed, developed or assigned.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS

 

  • Education and/or Experience: Minimum High School degree preferred. Minimum one year of related work experience and preferably knowledge of produce varieties, or overall equivalent experience in a warehouse or logistics environment. Experience with shipping, receiving and storage, warehouse safety and meeting customer expectations. Previous work experience in a perishable products industry preferred.  
  •  Language Skills: Excellent Communication skills including reading, writing, and verbally communicating effectively and professionally with other business departments, customers, and vendors. Ability to diplomatically deal with difficult situations and people while exhibiting a consistent level of professionalism.  Ability to communicate in Spanish preferred. 
  • Technical Skills:  Basic computer skills including Microsoft Office Suite and Warehouse Inventory software.
  • Reasoning Ability: Ability to think independently and to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of different situations without set guidelines. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, report or schedule form.
  • Equipment: Operate equipment such as, but not limited to, forklift, stand up pallet jack, electric pallet jack, computer, copier, phone.
  • Other Skills & Abilities: Must be able to work variable hours, days, weekends & Holidays. Ability to multi task and prioritize in a time-pressured environment.  Excellent organizational skills. High accuracy in work with attention to detail.  Ability to complete projects in a timely manner. Ability to get along and work cooperatively with others.  Positive and professional attitude.  Ability to respond positively to constructive feedback.  Ability to manage a project from its initiation to completion with minimal supervision.  Solution-oriented attitude with willingness to proactively solve issues.

 

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

 

  • Stand and walk or sit alternatively depending on specific needs of day.  Estimate 90% of time is spent on feet and 10% sitting at desk.
  • Have constant need to perform the following physical activities: bending/stooping/squatting, climbing stairs, pushing, pulling, twisting, lifting and reaching above shoulders. 
  • Have frequent need to perform standing and walking activities.
  • Consistent need to perform the following physical activities: writing/typing, grasping/turning, finger dexterity.
  • Lifting/carrying up to 50 lbs. frequently and over 50 lbs. occasionally.  
  • Vision requirements:  consistent need to complete forms, view computer screen.  Frequent need to see small detail.  Frequent need to see things clearly beyond arm’s reach.
  • Hearing requirements:  consistent need to communicate over telephone and in person.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

The noise level in the work environment is generally moderate but may be high during certain times of the day due to business level.  This position is exposed to temperatures varying from 34 to over 70 degrees and humidity levels varying from 80 to 95%.

California Winter Avocados

Most recently we have been seeing the shiny thin skinned Bacon avocado.  The Bacon season is just starting up and will go for at least a few more weeks. It has a mild flavor with creamy flesh. Be careful when cutting this avocado into slices as the skin is very thin and delicate. We recommend peeling back the skin and then slicing the avocado.

The Fuerte Avocado is now coming on strong for the next month or so. The medium sized pear shaped has an easy to peel thin green skin that stays green after ripening.  The flesh is a creamy pale green with a light smooth taste that pairs perfectly with a salad.

Interesting Fuerte Facts:

  • Fuerte means strong in Spanish because the variety can withstand temperatures as low as 26 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • Fuertes are a cross between a Mexican and Guatemalan species.
  • Fuerte was the original California favorite back in the 1950’s and helped to build the avocado industry.

Earl’s Fuertes are coming from various growers in San Diego County which produces 60 percent of all California Avocados, and is the acknowledged avocado capital of the nation.  (The California Avocado Commission CAC) Avocados contain Vitamin C and E which is good for the immune system and muscle development and  Riboflavin and Niacin aid in digestion and help maintain healthy skin. Avocados taste great and are good for you. What’s not to like?

Gold Nuggets

Gold Nugget Mandarins have bumpy skin, are very aromatic and are easy to peel. Fruit is seedless with a rich and sweet flavor. Season starts in San Diego County,overlaps and finishes in the foothills of Fresno County.
