Eat This Now! This Week in Produce at Earl’s 5.24.2011

The CA varietal citrus season is coming to a close.  We’ll continue to have Star Ruby Grapefruit out of the desert.  All districts are shipping new crop Valencias.  They will continue to sweeten with each pick.

We’ve got you covered on Strawberries, Blueberries and Raspberries moving into the holiday weekend.  We’ve got excellent supply on all varieties with excellent sugar and color.

Grape season has begun.  We’ll only be selling domestic grapes this season.  We’ve got Flames and Perlettes.  Currently they’re coming out of Cochella.

Stonefruit is in its beginning stages.    Early season prices are strong as the market searches for equilibrium.  Expect Aprictos, Cherries,  Peaches and Nectarines all to be here by next week!

We’ve got bins of both seedless and seeded melons from Cal-O and Heger available.  Both CA grown.  Talk to your salesperson about setting up your bin deliveries for Memorial weekend.

Have you tried the new Super Greens Salad from Organic Girl?   Super Greens is Organic Girl’s most nutritious salad; a blend of baby red chard, baby tat soi, baby spinach, baby green chard and baby arugula.  It’s chocked full of nutrient-rich dark, leafy greens.  Remember that Earl’s is your exclusive source in the Bay Area of Organic Girl Salads.

Although many southern growers are finished with Asparagus, CVP continues out of Salinas through July 4th.  Quality and supply are excellent.

Carrots, carrots, carrots!  Remember when you used to order carrots and there was just one variety?  Those days are done.  In addition to the “Classic” Orange Carrot  the Black Knight from Tutti Frutti have returned, these dark lovelies pair beautifully with Tutti’s Nantes and Alba’s Rainbow Carrots.

Any questions please call your salesperson.

Corn from Heger Farms

Our first taste of corn comes out of the Imperial Valley from Heger Farms, El Cento, CA. It will be around late July when corn is finally available from the Sacramento Valley – especially with our cool spring.
Corn is by far one of the hardest crops to be able to grow due to the inevitable presence of the corn earworm. Though control is possible organically through the use of a bacteria control it is spotty. Many of our larger growers have abandoned their programs. From what we have seen worm damage on this product is minimal and well within what works on a retail level. Corn is sweet and kernels well developed… Look for fresh bright green husks & bright shiny kernels. Through Memorial Day we will have all three flavors of corn on promotion.

Burkart Farm Peaches!

Organic Since 1979 – Burkart Farms is located in Dinuba, California just south east of Fresno where the warm weather is well suited to the heat loving stone fruit trees which reside on the 65 acre family-run farm. The yellow peach Super Rich is available May 16th as the first of 20 varieties of white and yellow peaches and 15 varieties of white and yellow nectarine. Shipping through August, enjoy some of California’s finest!

We’ve got Mangoes, Mangoes and more Mangoes! We’ve got a great deal on Haden Mangoes this week. Haden Mangoes are possibly the most striking to the eye due to their vibrant colors. Their beautiful reds, oranges, and yellow’s jump out to the eyes and scream “Buy Me – I must be good!” and trust us, they are. Hailing from Mexico, these mangoes are an incredible value and their flavor is at its peak. We also have some spectacular Tommy Atkins and Ataulfo’s this week. Why not spruce up your department with a Varietal Mango display?

Navels are also on special from Sespe Creek and Sundance this week, this fruit is eating exceptionally well. Remember to continue to take advantage of late season citrus varietals as the fruit just gets sweeter and sweeter.

We’ve got the first load of Peaches from Mexico coming in tonight. Check with your salesperson Tuesday a.m. for a flavor update!

Cedar Mills is on special again this week with their delicious Cluster Tomatoes. Cedar Mills Eco Farm is a four-acre Dutch System Greenhouse located in the Sierra Foothills. Situated at 3,000 feet, the perfect altitude for greenhouse growing, Cedar Mills is a community venture that brought a sustainable business to the site of a former sawmill. If you haven’t tried these clusters you’re missing out. They are bright red with excellent flavor!
