Vegetable Market Tightens Up with Cold and Rainy Weather

The end of February and beginning of March brought an extreme cold front with heavy rain throughout California and Mexico.  Parts of California experienced big hailstorms and snow was even spotted in northern regions of Mexico! The desert deal out of Yuma, Arizona and Coachella is ending early and the seasonal transition north to the Salinas Valley is starting late. Highs for this rest of the week in the Salinas Valley and southern area of Santa Maria will not get out of the 50s and lows will remain in the 30s and 40s.

The cooler weather has pushed back production. We are seeing lower volumes on vegetables and prices are increasing. Items immediately affected are green beans, cauliflower and broccoli. There will be more to come as these weather patterns stabilize. The Coastal View Produce asparagus deal is off to a slow start. Winter weather patterns have slowed the growth and is limiting supply.  Additionally harvest is halted by wet fields. For the time being, we will continue to bring in Mexican asparagus.
