Growers

We partner with growers of all sizes to source an extensive line of organic fruits and vegetables.  The majority of our growers come from California but during the winter months we rely on Mexican growers to supply crops that can't be grown in-state.  Partnering with geographically dispersed growers allows us to minimize seasonal and weather related inventory gaps.

From the start Earl's has focused on building enduring relationships with growers.  Some growers, like stone fruit grower Richard Burkart of Dinuba, CA, rely on us as their sole wholesale partner.  Lucky for us Richard's premium peaches, including his late season gem, the O'Henry are only available from us.

Tutti Frutti Farms:
Santa Barbara, CA

In 1988 Chris Cadwell founded Tutti Frutti Farm, located in the Santa Barbara wine country made famous in the movie Sideways. The grandson of a farmer, Chris has turned his passion for gardening into a career as an organic farmer, growing a variety of heirloom tomatoes – like the Cherokee purple and marvel stripe, peppers – like the corno di torro, and snap, snow and English peas, on his 200 acre CCOF certified farm.

As one of the few remaining vegetable growers in an area now better known for its pinot grapes, Chris attributes his location to his success. Far from polluting highways near the banks of the Santa Ynez River, the farm is surrounded by wilderness guaranteeing a wealth of natural predatory insects. Fifteen miles inland from the Pacific coast, a coastal breeze minimizes mildew while evening fog slows the ripening process, a truly natural flavor enhancer! Chris religiously plants cover crops, like vetch and clover, to keep his soil healthy and mineral rich. And the natural rhythms of the his unique micro climate offer additional defense against pests and weeds.

With the help of his dedicated, long term staff, Chris brings diversity to our kitchens with his focus on heirloom and specialty varieties, like the red lipstick and mini bell peppers, and heirloom tomatoes. Chris named his farm Tutti Frutti, Italian for ‘all fruits,’ because he originally intended to grow blood oranges and cherimoya, luckily for us he veered mostly towards vegetables! Like the neighboring pinot grapes, his ‘fruits’ benefit from the area’s unique geography and his magical touch.
